OUR MISSION

The mission of the Robert Service High School Counseling Department is to collaborate with students, parents, and staff to create an educational environment that supports all students.  We acknowledge that every student comes to Service High with different needs and deserves equitable access to reach their professional, personal, and communal goals.  Our comprehensive counseling program addresses student’s academic, college/career preparation, and social/emotional needs.  We recognize the cultural and economic diversity of our students and that they live in a rapidly changing society.

Counselors' Role in High School

* Adapted from the American School Counseling Association website

High school marks the final transition towards adulthood and the world of work.  During this period students become more autonomous by exploring and defining their independence, often from their parents.  Students explore their self identities, strengths and weaknesses, as well as what they want to do when they graduate from high school.  The strongest influence for students is their peer group, which can often yield pressure towards risky behaviors.  Students need guidance in making responsible, concrete decisions.  Students also face pressures of high-stakes testing, college admissions, scholarship and financial aid applications, and entrance into a competitive job market.

High school counselors are certified/licensed educators with a minimum of a master’s degree in school counseling.  They are uniquely qualified to address all students’ academic, personal/social and career development needs.
School counseling programs and services are essential for students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set appropriate career goals and realize full academic potential to become productive, contributing members of the world community.

At Service High School we focus our counseling services on four primary domains:

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SUPPORT: Individual counseling; family support; peer relations; crisis intervention; community agency referrals

ACADEMIC INTERVENTION: IEP/504 referrals and compliance; scheduling; college/career development and planning

TRANSITION ACTIVITIES: Middle to high school; new student enrollment; alternative options; post-high school preparation

PROGRAMS/CURRICULUM: College/career workshops; topical workshops; classroom presentations
